Roger Albert Clark Rally 2008

Posted 30th September 2008
Only 6 weeks to go...

The exhilaration of the Roger Albert Clark Rally is 6 weeks away. Joy Hewson and myself are working hard to ensure that marshals and radio marshals are allocated to the stages they have requested to assist with.
If you have not regsitered via the registration form under the marshals tab, please do so as soon as possible.

It is important to register even if you have volunteered your services directly to a Stage Commander. By registering to assist with the event indicating which stage(s) you want to assist, on allows Joy and myself to ensure that each stage is staffed to the correct levels and that no one stage is overmanned to the detriment of other stages thereby helping to make the event a safer event.

Once agan there is a quality entry which I am sure will increase during the following weeks so if you want to be a part of this unique event, register now.

Joy Hewson  – Deputy Staffing and Communications Officer

Thanks from Steve Cowley, Marshal & PC Coordinator

Thank you to you everyone that has offered their services to man Passage Controls on November's event.  Currently all but one of the controls are staffed!  They were all staffed but unfortunately someone has had to give backword on
PC 6 & 10 - Harwood Dale 1/2 on the Saturday so this is still available.

I wish there was more to tell you. Those of you that have worked with me in the past know that I like to update you with map references, timings, etc. as I know you need to confirm your accommodation requirements, so please be patient I'll pass them on as soon as I can.

If anyone has any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me, however trivial, and I'll try and get a response back to you as soon as I can.

Steve Cowley, Marshal & PC Coordinator

Momentum Builds For 2008 Event

The recently announced provisional route includes three confirmed new venues with an additional new stage location still to be announced.

For 2008, Harwood Dale, once a regular stage on North Yorkshire events, on the east coast is included in the Saturday leg whilst Craik and Newcastleton, again names from the classic era of rallying, are included in the Sunday Scottish leg.

These venues, new to the Roger Albert Clark Rally, slot into place with the now established stages such as Langdale, Greystoke, Ae and Broomylin thereby ensuring that you will have the opportunity to see classic rallying in emotive locations all with the glorious sound track of proper rally cars.

As we have done in previous years Joy Hewson and I will try our best to place you on the stages and/or control points that you request to be at.

I know Steve Cowley is once again working his magic with the Passage Control Crews.

If you are registering a group of marshals, please ensure that you have completed a Marshal’s Registration Form for everyone in the group as we will email details to everyone, individually, who registers and provides a valid email address.

Marshal’s registration forms are coming in steadily and the stage by stage marshal population is growing, Langdale being the venue of choice at the moment.

So, as they say, to avoid disappointment – Book Early!!!

Thank you for your support in previous years and your contribution to what is fast becoming the most good humoured, enjoyable and friendliest event in the country.

I hope that those of you who are able to help out this year will help to carry the above into this year’s event.

Joy Hewson  – Deputy Staffing and Communications Officer

Steve Cowley, Marshal & PC Coordinator looking for volunteers!

Well here we are with some 200 days to go before this years rally, but I've just been asked to carry out the role that I ran last year, Marshal & PC Coordinator, so I thought I'd better make contact. I know you may think it's early, but I believe in passing out information as soon as possible, so that you can decide whether you want to be part of this great rally once again, and its a great feeling for me to know that we have such a dedicated team of marshals, with so much rallying experience out there.

Once again we need not just stage marshals and radio crews, but also marshals, time keepers, etc., to help in all areas; in Leeds at Scrutineering and the Start of the event; in Carlisle at the overnight halts and restarts; in the service areas and at time and passage controls throughout the event.

If you’re interested in helping out on this year’s event, don’t hang around; contact us as soon as possible!  Fill in the marshal registration form which can be accessed via this website (see below) and send it off to us. If you're interested in being part of the team that runs the Passage Controls please contact me directly, otherwise forward your marshals registration form to Joy Hewson. Chrys Worboys and Joy Hewson have the task of staffing the event so I'm sure they would love to be inundated now with volunteers wishing to select their particular spot.

So, what can I tell you at the moment?

This years Roger Albert Clark Rally will be running from Friday 14th November to Monday 17th November inclusive.

This year we will be running:

Roger Albert Clark Rally

  • Friday - Monday, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Scotland, Scottish Borders, Kielder

Roger Albert Clark Open Rally

  • Friday - Monday, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Scotland, Scottish Borders, Kielder

Kall Kwik Rally

  • Saturday, Yorkshire

Roger Albert Clark Clubmans Rally

  • Sunday, Scotland, Scottish Borders, Kielder first pass.

DeLacy Night Stages Rally

  • Sunday Night, Scottish Borders, Kielder second pass

The event will be broadly similar to the successful format of 2007, with the rally based in Leeds. With some stages in the dark of Friday evening (14 November), the route will then head into the Yorkshire forests on Saturday before an overnight halt in Carlisle.

Sunday will concentrate on the classic stages in the Scottish borders with the return to rallying of the Craik and Newcastleton classic Scottish borders forest stages, Newcastleton has not been used for at least a decade, while the last rally in Craik is thought to have been the 1990 Lombard RAC Rally. A classic nine-mile test is planned in Craik, while the Newcastleton stage will be linked to the Kershope stage to produce a 16-mile stage running across the Scottish border, before the challenging final leg in Kielder on Monday and an epic 20-mile stage to conclude the action for the fifth running of the Roger Albert Clark Rally.

If you want to see all the up to date information about the rally keep checking this website, you'll already find out that we have 12 entries so far, and if you wish there's the link to the events forum, where you'll be able to read and post items about the event.  If you have a question, post it on the forum, and you're sure to get an answer as the Colin Heppenstall, the rally manager is actively monitoring and replying to questions about the design and format of the event.

As I mentioned earlier, I am tasked with the manning of the Passage Controls, where the competitors will stop to hand in time cards and then the PC crews will ring in the results to rally HQ, hopefully such that by the time competitors arrive at the next service, or main time control the latest results have been issued and are then handed to them, quite a feat really, especially as sometimes the road section from the PC to the TC can be as little as 9 miles. So if you fancy joining my PC team please contact me as soon as possible.  For your information I've listed below the PC's and TC's which I need manning and my best estimate on the present timings that the controls will be operational.
